This is Sidewalk Film Festival’s 20th anniversary and we are so excited to be covering it again this year!
The 20th Annual Sidewalk Film Festival, a celebration of new independent cinema in downtown Birmingham, is set to take place August 21-26, 2018. Since its debut in 1999, filmmakers from across the country and around the world have come to Birmingham to screen their work at Sidewalk and have been thrilled to discover fresh, enthusiastic crowds eager to devour new independent cinema.
With ten venues located within Birmingham’s historic Theatre District, spontaneity rules the schedule of Sidewalk attendees. Low-priced weekend passes provide easy access to Sidewalk venues, encouraging attendees to seek out new films and sample programming they may not otherwise see. The result is a crowd rich in diversity and united in a hunger for new film. Come see what the hype is all about and experience some good old-fashioned southern hospitality! Join the Junior Board of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama on Friday, August 24th at Tin Roof as they host the 4th Annual Sweet Home Brews event! Celebrity judges will be on hand to judge each of the teams on most team spirit, best tasting food, and best all around. Tailgate Challenge is a great way to kick off football season, show your team spirit and help support The Bell Center.

The Taste of 4th Avenue Jazz Festival will be held Saturday, August 25, 2018 in Birmingham’s Historic 4th Avenue District Downtown with gates opening at 12 Noon and show kicking off at 2:00 pm. This event is FREE and open to the public.
As a hub for black commerce and culture during the days of segregation, the historic 4th Avenue Business District is one-of-a-kind. The district set the scene for the taste-makers of yesterday and stands today as a testament to the resilience of a people. Seeking to celebrate the spirit of the district, the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, inspired by the “Taste of Chicago,” launched the first Taste of 4th Avenue Jazz Festival in 2003. Now approaching its 15th year, this one-day event has become a popular summer staple and continues to be presented at no cost to attendees, in collaboration with Urban Impact, Inc., the Fourth Avenue Merchants Association, and the City of Birmingham.

This year’s Back to School Bash is presented by Pizzeria GM and Ash Homewood. The event will kick off the new school year with an array of rides, bounce houses, food and live entertainment. There is no admission charge to enter the event area around Homewood Patriot Park, but to jump and play on the bounce houses and ride the mechanical attractions an unlimited attractions wristband ($10) must be purchased. Proceeds from the wristband sales go to benefit the Homewood High School Band.
