It’s November (already!) which means the holiday season is gearing up! This weekend is also Dia de los Muertos, one of the most colorful festivals of the year! There’s also plenty of opportunities to start, or continue, your Christmas shopping. Christmas Village, aka Birmingham’s Hunger Games, is going on at the BJCC with TONS of shopping options! Held annually at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex, Christmas Village Festival is an Alabama tradition with deep roots not only in Alabama hearts, but in the hearts of customers all across the United States. Mothers and daughters, sisters, and friends begin their holiday shopping by meeting in Birmingham the first weekend in November to enjoy an amazing variety of gift ideas - all under one roof. While some shoppers make a day or it, others have decided that one day is just not enough time to take in the unique sampling of arts, crafts, gifts and food.

This festival keeps on growing! Join Bare Hands and celebrate life at Día de los Muertos quinceañera in the streets of Pepper Place! Celebrate the lives of those that came before and those that are still with us through music, memorial roll call, jazz street parade, the Frida Kahlo Ceremony, dance, food vendors, the Corona Beer Garden, art, kids’ activities brought to you by the Birmingham Museum of Art and most importantly the altars erected to those we have loved!

Bards & Brews will hold its final Open Mic event of 2017 at Oak Hill Cemetery in downtown Birmingham under a full moon! There will be beer, spoken word poetry, as well as a musical performance by the Murder of Jane Crow. As always, Master of Ceremonies Brian “Voice Porter” Hawkins will deftly guide both novice and veteran poets through an evening of verse with topics that may include relationships, politics, social justice, and the availability of burial plots near the new 20/59 flyovers.

Paws for the Cause is a certified 5k off-road cross-country race through the beautiful Veterans Park in Hoover. The course takes you on a path through the park around the lake and through tree-lined trails surrounding the park. The Kid Fun Run and 1 Mile Pet Walk allows children to explore the park and you to show off your dogs while they are getting some exercise too! All dogs that participate will receive a special prize.
