Birmingham Weekend Events: Aug 1st-3rd

We cannot believe July is already coming to a close! While the kids prepare to go back to school, there are still plenty of fun activities and events to enjoy as we begin to close out the Summer season. August also brings us the Sidewalk Film Festival, our favorite festival in Birmingham!  (Get your tickets here!
We’re still recovering from having our nephews last week where we went to FunCity, McWane, the Bham Zoo, Top Golf, Alabama Adventure, a Baron’s Game, and more! They had such a great time!  Check out the fun events happenin’ this weekend in the greater Birmingham area and get your last minute fun in before the kids go back to school!

If you weren’t aware, Sidewalk Film Festival & Cinema, a 501c3, had a $25k pre-approved federal grant clawed back because of their dedication to inclusivity in their programing.  The best thing you can do to help is to check out what’s going on at Sidewalk Cinema this weekend and buy tickets to their events and concessions once you arrive! They host all kinds of events like karaoke, FREE Bad Movie Nights, Knitflix & Chill, Pajama Brunches, and fantastic films! CatVideoFest is a compilation reel of the latest and best cat videos culled from countless hours of unique submissions and sourced animations, music videos, and classic internet powerhouses. CatVideoFest is a joyous communal experience, only available in theaters, and raises money for cats in need through partnerships with local cat charities, animal welfare organizations, and shelters to best serve cats in the area.

Pilcrow Turns 7!

From giant construction equipment to safety machines, watch for more details soon on the inaugural “Big Machines Petting Zoo” at Your Birmingham Zoo. Big Machine Petting Zoo is on Saturday, August 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Expect giant equipment from Thompson Tractor, City of Birmingham, and Jefferson County to explore in the zoo parking lot during the final weekend before school starts. This is a free event and great fun before heading in to visit your favorite animals at your Birmingham Zoo.

These free workshops help spread awareness for Día de los Muertos Alabama while offering a meaningful, hands-on art experience for participants of all ages. This is a hands-on workshop led by Bare Hands artists and teachers — free of charge.

In response to unexpected funding rescissions from the National Endowment for the Arts, several Birmingham-based arts organizations are facing serious financial setbacks. TrimTab is donating 10% of sales to four arts organizations that had grant awards revoked after being promised: InToto Creative Arts, Sidewalk Film, Studio By The Tracks, and Birmingham Children's Theatre. These organizations serve vulnerable communities, create jobs, and enrich Birmingham’s cultural life. We hope you'll come out to learn about these organizations, support their work, and enjoy several free and family friendly offerings!
