It’s Memorial Day Weekend!!!
A lot of you may be traveling to the beach this weekend, but for those of you hanging around Birmingham here are some great events to check out during the long weekend! One major event to check out is the SEC Baseball Tournament which is already ongoing at the Hoover Met! Check below for details on that and other fun things to do!

SEC Baseball Tournament

You can watch some of the nation’s best baseball as the top teams battle it out for the 2019 SEC Baseball Tournament title May 21-26 at the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium! This event also has family-friendly fun for all ages at the FanFest, free to the public and open every day of the tournament. Tickets start at just $18 and weekend passes are available.

We’re just one year out from the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. This week, four of the top five wheelchair rugby teams in the world will battle in Birmingham May 22-24. Make plans to attend this free event! This is such an exciting sport to watch and it’s right here in Birmingham!

Bring some friends and beverages (adult included!) and join the Sloss metal arts staff for a night of cast iron creative fun! It’s like sips and strokes on steroids! The Sloss artists will help you create your own cast iron bowl (doodle bowl) for $45. The bowl mold and tools are provided. We still have our bowl on our mantle! It is so much fun!!!

Night Hike

Experience Oak Mountain State Park after dark! Go on this guided night hike and see what glows, calls, and crawls at night on the trails! SPECIAL GUEST Greg Harber with Birmingham Audubon will come along with us on the search for Night Jars, cool nocturnal birds! The group will meet at the Beach Access Parking Lot on Terrace Drive at 7:00pm! After a quick introduction you will begin the fun on the Treetop Nature Trail! Bring a Flashlight or Headlamp it will be dark! (Not stroller friendly. No pets please.)

**Guided History Hike

Join Gary Bostany on a hike at Ruffner Mountain while learning the history and its early mining beginnings. You can view some of the mining relics, including an iron-ore crusher at mine #3. Ruffner Mountain was once home to the Sloss-Sheffield Mines, where iron-ore and limestone were extracted and sent to the blast furnaces at Sloss. The hike is over 3 miles total, usually about 3 hours, with moderate to difficult inclines and slopes. Adults and children 10 and up are welcome. We will meet at the Nature Center. Please bring water and any snacks to enjoy.
