This weekend is full of fun! The Birmingham Boat Show returns to the BJCC for a MASSIVE expo of all things boat and fishing related. There’s a great show at Iron City featuring both Floozies and Too Many Zooz, both of which are such a trip to watch! Then on Sunday, you can take the kids to see some incredible magic at the Magic Moments Magic Show! We’ve gone to a few of these and each time we’re blown away at the mind boggling illusions performed in the lobby, on stage, and even in the middle of the crowd! Check out the details for these and other events happenin’ around town.
Note: Be weather alert this weekend as the roads may be a little icy late Saturday night into early Sunday morning. Luckily, the temps will rise to well above freezing by midday.

CULTS: A History
Thursday, 7pm
Cost:$15
At: Avondale Brewing Co. (
map)
Anyone who has spent more than a minute stream-surfing knows that cults are having a moment right now. What accounts for the current spate of cult documentaries that treat everything from Jonestown to fast fashion? What’s the difference between being a cult leader and having a cult of personality? Just how does the notion of cults function for us, and what does our usage of the term tell us about ourselves?
This talk will cover a brief history and evolution of “cult” (a category that went from innocuous to incendiary in relatively short order) and will play some of the hits regarding groups that have received its rhetorical treatment. More broadly, they will discuss what its current connotations have to do with our everyday attempts at making meaning and imposing order on chaos.

Club Silencio: Music from the Works of David Lynch (18+)
Thursday, 7pm
Cost: $14
At: Saturn (
map)
Built in the image of David Lynch, Club Silencio operates on its own schedule, on its own plane. After making its initial debut in June 2017 following The Return, the band felt it was time for a return of their own. Playing music from Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, Inland Empire, and, of course, Twin Peaks, the band balances in the precarious space between tangible and surreal, between lucid and dreaming.
Lynch held Americana in an authentic space—his work was never intended to include even a hint of irony. Yet, he was unafraid and sought it from every angle, even if that vision included the darker underside.  This event will also feature a screening of “Mulholland Drive.”

Cosmic Charlie
Friday, 8pm
Cost: $30
At: Workplay (
map)
Cosmic Charlie was born in the musical Mecca of Athens, Georgia. From its summer 1999 inception, the band swiftly cemented its reputation as a band that puts a unique and personal twist on the Grateful Dead catalogue. Cosmic Charlie is a Dead cover band for folks that are ambivalent about Dead cover bands.Rather than mimicking the Dead exactly, Cosmic Charlie chooses to tap into the Dead’s energy and style as a foundation on which to build. The result is a healthy balance of creativity and tradition, where both the band and its audience are taken to that familiar edge with the sense that music is actually being MADE each night.

SIDEWALK BAD MOVIE MARATHON!
Friday Jan 30, 6pm-UNTIL….
Cost: $250 Registration (via donations/sponsorships)
At: Sidewalk Cinema (
map)
Do something good and take on the challenge of the Sidewalk Bad Movie Marathon! Participants will compete to see who can last the longest in the face of some really terrible movies. Remember, this is a test of endurance, not a race. All are encouraged to join in, whether you're a casual weekend Netflix binger or a true cinephile. We’ve participated every year and have taken a trophy home each time! (So BRING IT ON!)
In addition to watching bad movies, participants will work with Sidewalk staff and volunteers to raise much-needed funds to “cash-in” for food, caffeine, a bad movie veto, even a 30 minute nap! They can also use money raised to force their competition to endure guided meditations, or drink some sleepy time tea! All funds raised will support the important education and outreach work that Sidewalk does year-round.
By participating and fundraising, you will help ensure the continuation of important educational programs like the Sidewalk Youth Board, Sidewalk EDU, and the Black Lens Filmmaker Grant and Membership Program.
SIGN UP TO PARTICIPATE, or sign up to watch the live stream, OR (PLEASE!) donate to help Russell win another Bad Movie Marathon!
