June is already here and brings with it a ton of great events and activities in the greater Birmingham area! We want to wish everyone a happy Pride Month, and will be highlighting some Pride events throughout June.  It looks like we MIGHT actually get a DRY weekend this week, so it will be the perfect time to get out and enjoy some much needed sunshine!  This weekend has some great events, so check the list below and start planning some fun with friends and family! Oh, and we got to screen “Backrooms” at Sidewalk Cinema. Drop by the Birmingham Museum of Art for a midday ArtBreak with Viola Ratcliffe as she explores the presence of surreal and sacred imagery in Wall to Wall. Using Antoine Williams’s mural The Harvesters as a point of departure, Ratcliff examines how Black artists create space for spiritual imagination and interior worlds through their practice. Drawing from Zora Neale Hurston’s reflections on Mother Catherine Seals, she weaves connections to the work and legacies of Joe Minter, Harriet Powers, Erin Mitchell, and the writings of Imani Perry.

The legacy of the late Brian “Voice Porter” Hawkins, longtime host of Birmingham Public Library’s popular monthly spoken word poetry and craft beer series Bards & Brews, will be celebrated during a special Bards & Brews Open Mic on Friday, June 5, 2026, at Ferus Artisan Ales in Trussville. The spoken word open mic will take place across from Ferus in the Trussville Entertainment District at The Reserve, a venue located above Umami at 215 Bell Way, Suite B, Trussville, AL 35173. Doors will open at 6 p.m., followed by a musical guest at 6:30 p.m. and poetry. Hosted by current emcee Thed Weller, the evening will feature live music by Kari Dione followed by open mic spoken word poetry celebrating the creativity, community and artistic expression championed by Voice Porter. For nearly a decade, Voice Porter served as the face and voice of Bards & Brews until his unexpected passing in August 2021 at age 42. Porter was widely known throughout Alabama’s spoken word community as an advocate for Ensley, poets, artists and community expression. Voice was a friend and an incredible advocate for our community.

Pride has always been more than a celebration, it’s been a movement, a protest, and a form of rebellion. This June, Central Alabama Pride is turning up the volume with Birmingham’s first official all-ages Punk Pride show! In the words of Grand Master Sen Genshitsu: “Peacefulness through a bowl of tea.” With the shared wish to create a world where people can connect through a “single bowl of tea”, the sisters began the project “one wan.” Their goal is simple: to serve matcha and share a moment of space together. Through the casual outdoor tea style known as “nodate,” they hope to share the peaceful spirit of Japanese tea culture across the United States. Matcha will be served in a space with tatami mats.
